Star Cotton Knit Hat

 

 

 

SUPPLIES

Star Classic Elite Yarn 1 skein

Size 7 – 16” circular needles

Size 7 double point needles for decreases

Yarn/tapestry needle

Stitch marker

 

 

 

Cast on 80 stitches, place marker, join, being careful not to twist the stitches.

Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 1 ½ inches.

Work in stockinette stitch (knit every row) until the whole piece measures 6 inches from cast on.  (4 ½ inches for chemo hats)

Decrease as follows, switching to double point needles when it gets small enough to be too tight on circular needles.

Round 1 (K2tog, K8) eight times; 72 stitches.

Round 2 Knit all stitches.

Round 3 (K2tog, K7) eight times; 64 stitches.

Round 4 Knit all stitches.

Round 5 (K2tog, K6) eight times; 56 stitches.

Round 6 Knit all stitches.

Round 7 (K2tog, K5) eight times; 48 stitches.

Round 8 Knit all stitches.

Round 9 (K2tog, K4) eight times; 40 stitches.

Round 10 Knit all stitches.

Round 11 (K2tog, K3) eight times; 32 stitches.

Round 12 Knit all stitches.

Round 13 (K2tog, K2) eight times; 24 stitches.

Round 14 Knit all stitches.

Round 15 (K2tog, K1) eight times; 16 stitches.

Round 16 Knit all stitches.

Round 17 (K2tog) eight times; 8 stitches.

Cut yarn leaving a 10 inch tail.

With yarn needle, thread the tail through the remaining 8 stitches; tighten to finish.  Weave in ends.

Use colorful, soft, baby weight yarn and size 5 or 6 needles.  Pattern worked in just 40 rows!

 

 

Cast on 21 stitches. 

 

Row 1                    Knit Row 2                    K 1, make 1, k 9, make 1, k 1, make 1, k 9, make 1, k 1

                                [Note:  to “make 1,” pick up horizontal loop between stitches from front onto                                 left needle then knit into the back of that stitch – this makes a smooth increase.]

Row 3                   K 25 Row 4                    Repeat increase row 2, but k 11 instead of 9

Row 5                                    K 29

Row 6                                    Repeat increase row 4, but k 13 instead of 11 Row 7                   K 33

Row 8-11              Knit Row 12                  K 2 tog, knit to last 2 stitches, k 2 tog

BEGIN INSTEP

 

Row 13                  K 18, k 2 tog, stop and turn needles around as if at end of row Row 14                  Slip 1 (as if to P), p 5, p 2 tog, turn

Row 15                  Slip 1 (as if to K), k 5, k 2 tog, turn Rows 16-22          Repeat Rows 14 and 15 until 21 stitches remain

TO MAKE HOLES FOR RIBBON

 

Row 25                  K 1, *YO (yarn over), K 2 tog; repeat from * to last stitch, then YO, K1                   Row 26                  Knit, but on every 4th stitch knit into front and back of stitch to increase

                                across row to 26 stitches.  Maintain 26 stitches in all remaining cuff rows.

 

OPTIONS FOR CUFF (last 13 rows)

 

 

1) Garter Stitch                   Rows 27-39          Knit across.  Bind off loosely in knit.

 

 

2) Stockinette Stitch          Rows 27-39          *Knit 1 row, Purl 1 row; repeat.  (To add a stripe for a sport sock look, change to contrasting color for rows 33-36).

 

 

3) Rib Stitch                         Rows 27-39          *K 1, P1; repeat from * across.  Bind off loosely in rib.                     

4) Rice (Seed) Stitch          Row 27                                  K 1, P 1                                                  Row 28                                  P 1, K 1

                                                Rows 29-39          Repeat Rows 27 and 28.  Bind off loosely in knit.

                                                Rows 31-38          Repeat  these four rows 2x more.                                                 Row 39                  Knit across.  Bind off loosely in knit.                               

6) Lacey Cuff                       Row 27                  K2, *YO, slip 1 (as if to K), K1, PSSO, K3; repeat from * to last

                                                                                2 sts., K2.    [Note: PSSO means pass slip stitch over the knitted stitch as if you’re binding one off.]                                                 Row 28                  Purl across

                                                Row 29                  K2, *K2 tog., YO, K3; repeat from * to last 2 sts., YO, K2.                                                 Row 30                  Purl across

                                                Rows 31-38          Repeat these four rows 2x more.                                                 Rows 39-40          Knit, then bind off loosely in knit.     

                  FINISHING

 

Leave 12 inches for weaving seam.  Using darning needle and whip stitch, sew seam from top of cuff around heel to toe.  Bury ends.  Cut 9 inches of ¼ inch ribbon, or crochet 9” chain, and thread through holes.  Tie in bow at front.
